John’s work arises from personal experiences of distinctive physical environments as well as the geography of his own psyche.
In recent years he has explored liminal images and experiences as a means of examining both the individual and the universal journey. John often references the iconography of ancient cultures, especially Egyptian.
Vessel images are a recurring metaphor; archetypal symbols of bodily containment and, simultaneously, representations of horns, the universal metaphor of the link between the human and spirit world.
John’s use of natural earth pigments, combined with his visceral and gestural mark-making imbues his work with grounded and temporal qualities.
His images are simultaneously earthed and transcendent.
In his most recent paintings water has emerged as the dominant element. These are paintings that flow from a deep well, acknowledged but not understood.
